capture without deploy (sorry for 2nd attempt)

Hi group!

Sorry that I am posting a second similar thread but maybe my first one did
not describe the problem deep enough. I am also sure that I am not the only
person with this problem but I can not find any solution in the web!

Here is my szenario:

I am doing the core deploy as shown in Microsoft screencasts: Deploying and
capturing the image with one task sequence. After that I have a reference
vista machine on which I perform a lot of configuration steps and I also
install a loft of specific (also non-MS) applications. It's now my goal to
capture this machine again - this is now my target machine that meets the
requirements of the company. I know I can do the task which booting to WinPE
and calling imageX.exe (syspreping before manually) directly - but is there
no chance to do a "capture only" task sequenze with the MDT?

I would highly appreciate any further infos as I really can't find any infos
in the web

kind regards

Hi Johan!

I can't tell you how happy I am that you have built this template - many
thanks! I just figured out a small problem:

- I created the task sequence based on your template and changed some values
(Distribution Server, Image name)
- I created the template and startet the LIteTouch.vbs Skript as described
in your blog.
- I chose the "CaptureOnly" task sequence.
- After starting the process the reference machine started to run and then
syspreped the machine and began to reboot.
- I then expected that the machine will boot into WinPE and starts to
caputure - but it startet to boot vista and did the things it has to do
after sysprep :)
- My next attempt was to start WinPE via PXE-boot because I wanted to try
the caputure task sequence initiated in WinPE. But no wizard of task
sequences was displayed and the machine started to create an image....
- I canceled, rebooted and ran the LiteTouch.vbs again. At the next reboot I
manually booted into WinPE and the machine started to capture the Wim-Image.

So there is someting wrong after the sysprep because it does not
automatically boot into WinPE - this process has to be done manually.

Do you have any ideas what's going wrong here?

Kind regards and many thanks in advance

Yes I have.... :)

I updated the TS today to address an issue with not detecting Vista
correctly. Download the updated sample, and try again.

Hi Johan!

I figured out another problem that could have to do something with this
capture only. When Deploying the image with a "Standard client task
sequence" I get an error message in the phase "installing operating system"
when applying the wim-image. The message is that it cannot access the
\\192.168.2.2...\WimVista.wim" - The path is of course o.k!

But maybe this is also an result of an error I get when editing the
unattand.xml

"Catalog creation failed". This is an error due to the reason I have an 64
bit deployment server and a 32 bit client operating system. I have not fixed
this error yet!

So what is your opinion?

Hi Johan!

Perfect - Now it worked but I have a little warning at the end of the
capture process:

"Unable to copy unattend.xml for sysprep, c:\Minint\unattend.xml not found"

Deployment is currently running (hope that it will work) - do you think this
warning has any impect on deployment?

Well, if you have unattend.xml settings that you want to have in your
image (they are normally added dynamically during deployment of the
image), you can simply create a minint folder on your reference and ad
an unattend.xml if you want to...

Hi Johan!

Ah ok- then it is no issue that the image does not deploy yet. I get the
following error:

"Setup failed applying image \\192.168.2.2\Distribution$\Operating
Systems\WimVista\WimVista.wim, rc=32 Non-zero return code executing command
"X:\Deploy\Tolls\X86\TsmBootsprap.exe" /env:SAStart, rc = -2147467259"

I found some articles that describe that they had to capture with using the
/flags command. I will try that now but do you have other ideas?

Could it be an issue that I have installed the MDT on 1 64 bit server with
64 bit WAIK and want to deploy a 32 bit machine?

Thanks for your very professional help!!

Hi Johan!

I found the error - we have to add the /flags command at the capture process

imagex /compress fast /flags "Enterprise" /capture c: s:\WinVista.wim
"myImage" /verify

Capturing the image with this command leaded to success (well i hope - I
went away at the "expanding image" phase of 15 % and did not wait for the
rest now :)).

I have looked in the CaptureTS.xml now but I cannot find any option to add
these flags?

Do you have any further ideas?

You can simply add the flag after the image is captured... no need to
re-capture the image... use this syntax...

imagex /flags [flags value] /info myhappywim.wim [image index] [new
name] [new description]

Let me see if I can have the Capture Only TS to set that value... I
know the script doing the capture is looking for the ImageFlags
variable... I'll keep you posted...

Hi John!

Thanks for your answer - well I did a manually workaround with calling the
imagex /capture with the /flags option.

Now it's more a matter of deploying for me as the capture image still stops
after the "install operating system" task sequence. I do not know whether
there is something wrong in the capture process or it is a matter of the

I could start windows (it's the same as if I would start a syspreped
machine!) as mdt applied the image but did not finish it. For that I would
like to ask you a question (sorry that this might be a kind of cross
posting!): What is your approach to debug such kind of problem. Analyse the
logs in c:\windows\temp\DeploymentLogs or are there some additional debug
options that can get turned on to get into it a bit deeper.

I really like the concept of Microsoft deployment and it would be perfect
for my company if i get it working as we have to do a lot of deployment
stuff for schools. Up to now we do deployment with ghost - but my goal is to
do every new vista-deployment with mdt - of course only if I get it running
:)

Thanks for your help!

Well, if you have unattend.xml settings that you want to have in your
image (they are normally added dynamically during deployment of the
image), you can simply create a minint folder on your reference and ad
an unattend.xml if you want to...

This is an error due to the reason I have
an
64
bit deployment server and a 32 bit client operating system. I have not fixed
this error yet!
So what is your opinion?

Hi group!
Sorry that I am posting a second similar thread but maybe my first
one
did
not describe the problem deep enough. I am also sure that I am not
the
only
person with this problem but I can not find any solution in the web!
Deploying

capturing the image with one task sequence. After that I have a reference
vista machine on which I perform a lot of configuration steps and I also
install a loft of specific (also non-MS) applications. It's now my
goal
to
capture this machine again - this is now my target machine that
meets
the
requirements of the company. I know I can do the task which booting
to
WinPE
and calling imageX.exe (syspreping before manually) directly - but
is
there
no chance to do a "capture only" task sequenze with the MDT?
I would highly appreciate any further infos as I really can't find

I'm trying Johans suggestion located here:

http://www.deployvista.com/Default.aspx?tabid=70&EntryID=77

I follow it to a "T" and I get the following after the computer restarts and tries to run the wim capture:

unable to copy unattend.xml for Sysrep. C:\MININT\unattend.xml not found. The network path was not found.

ERROR - unable to map a network drive to \\DEMOSRV001\Distribution$
Error creating an image of drive C: rc = 2

ZTI ERROR - Non-Zero return code by ZTI BAckup, rc = 2

Non-zero return code executing comman "X:\Deploy\Tools\X86\TsmBootstrap.exe" /env:SAContinue, rc = 2147467259

I'm pulling my hair out over this. I have a perfect computer that i need a WIM image of to deploy. How the heck do i do this?????

You need to update ComputerBackupLocation in the TS to reflect your
own environment (unless you too named your server DEMOSRV001 :) )

This value can also be set in customsettings.ini (but then you need to
disable that action in the TS)

I have followed your latest guidence. The client is an XP Home on a netbook.
Winpe has started and the Running action: Create Wim screen is showing. The
problem is that the capture has beeen running for a few hours and when I look
on the server where the image is being stored it is only 1kb. Any ideas?
Where is the log for this sequence being stored?
